II : Syndicate

[This chronicle is best read from the beginning.]

Many decades after Schrödinger's Cataclysm, the planetary governor turned Rogue Trader died of natural causes and was honoured as a hero. Despite his remarkable achievements, Lord Schrödinger always harboured a secret guilt for the citizens of Barfunweltz-2 who had vanished with their home world, and his family believed this was the true cause of his death.

His position, titles and (most crucially) his Warrant of Trade were inherited by his only daughter. The new Lady Schrödinger had been a child at the time of the Cataclysm and her entire life up to this point had been devoted to training and planning for her eventual ascension to the position of Rogue Trader.

Lady Schrödinger, Rogue Trader

Schrödinger enthusiastically embraced her long-awaited Rogue Trader role and set about reforming her fleet's organisation and cultural identity. Rather than languish in memories of the past wonders of a lost planet, Schrödinger urged the refugees to look forward, complete their mission and fulfil their destiny.

Every ship in the fleet was given its own role in the investigation of the Cataclysm and the search for Barfunweltz-2. The old political structures which had worked so well on the pleasure world were transformed into a meritocracy more suited to life in the lethal void of space. But Schrödinger had inherited her father's wisdom. She understood that a nation of ships' crews needed a unifying identity and so she incorporated many elements and ancient traditions of Barfunweltz-2's rich cultural heritage.

Its purpose renewed, her fleet transformed into an armada and called itself 'Schrödinger's Syndicate'. She changed her family motto from usque ad mortem vivere to et vivus et mortuus (both alive and dead) to reflect their changed circumstances post-Cataclysm. Their world was dead, and yet here it lived on.
