XV - Bureaucrat

[This chronicle is best read from the beginning.]

Rumours of heresy rarely escape the Inquisition's attention. Before long, whispers about the burgeoning 'Bane of Barfunweltz' reached the ears of Witchfinder Lukas, sector overseer of the Ordo Hereticus. Originally, Governor Schrödinger had persuaded her to allow his own specialist Arbites task force to investigate the Cataclysm. But now, given their lack of progress, and a possible increase in cultic activity within the armada of Schrödinger's Syndicate, the Witchfinder has decided the so-called 'Watch' is not equal to its task. Furthermore, Lukas deems it necessary to scrutinise the new Rogue Trader herself, Governor Schrödinger's daughter.

The Witchfinder has therefore appointed the Emperor's Vendetta to the task, under the delegated command of Interrogator Justinius Moat. Justinius is an officious and unpleasant man, puritan by inclination and the epitome of a heartless bureaucrat. Beneath his Witch Hunter's hat he sports a grotesquely grinning mask, but it rarely hides a smiling face. Witchfinder Lukas could think of no safer pair of hands for this investigation, and has indicated to Moat that it could earn him his long-awaited promotion to Inquisitor.

From the moment of his arrival within the armada, Justinius has been abhorred throughout Schrödinger's Syndicate. And yet, at Lady Schrödinger's insistence, Proctor Hastings of the Watch has deferred to Moat's inquisitorial authority, fully cooperated with the interrogator's absurd administrative demands, and even remained professional in the face of his infuriating demeanour.
