XVIII - Atonement

[This chronicle is best read from the beginning.]

Because of Barfunweltz-2's uncommonly peaceful state and its cultural emphasis on self-indulgence, the pleasure world had never been a popular posting for the servants of the Adepta Sororitas. Nonetheless, Canoness Commander Gaskell had led a modest Commandery of Sororitas calling themselves the Sisters of Abstinence. Their main role involved supporting the Ordo Hereticus and Adeptus Arbites in the successful subjugation of the diabolical principalities, most particularly the Lord of Excess.

At the time of Schrödinger's Cataclysm, Canoness Gaskell and a few of the Sisters managed to escape with some of their Inquisitorial agent colleagues. Their relief was short-lived however, as Witchfinder Lukas immediately summoned all such personnel for interrogation. She was convinced that the Cataclysm was the work of the Ruinous Powers and that representatives of the Inquisition and Ecclesiarchy must be held responsible for failing to predict and prevent it.

Despite decades of thorough interrogation, no genuine evidence of such failure was ever found. Nonetheless, their guilt still unassuaged, Canoness Gaskell and the Sisters of Abstinence took up vows of penitence. Stripping off their power armour and taking up blessed eviscerators, they became Sisters Repentiae and were gathered to form the Barfunweltz Repenitentionary. The unit was placed under the stern command of the merciless Repentia Superior Woolph, specially recalled from her post as chaplain of the Black Tower penal colony on Leibfraumilch.

Meanwhile, the few inquisitorial agents who had survived Witchfinder Lucas's interminable debriefing were handed over to the Adepts of Mars where they were swiftly and brutally transformed into mindless archo-flagellants. They were then reunited with the Barfunweltz Repenitentiary and sent to rendezvous with Schrödinger's Syndicate. Thus were the disgraced former agents to not only repurposed for the Emperor's glory, but also permitted to seek atonement through the hunt for of their lost planet.

Although technically under his command, Interrogator Justinius Moat was happy to keep the crazed penitents at arm's length, leaving them to the tender mercies of Repentia Superior Woolph, who quickly became known throughout the fleet as 'the Blue Nun'. To Moat's mind they had failed the Inquisition and deserved no mercy. Nonetheless, he occasionally finds use for the disgraced Canoness Gaskell and her penitent eviscerator.
